The great singer Tina Turner asked a question within one of her songs, “What’s love got to do with it?” As I listen to the song, I think of one struggling to understand the relationship between romance, sexual desire, hormones and love? It is complicated, and probably requires an excellent biologist, a Nobel Prize winning neurobiologist and a deeply caring psychologist to even begin to explain it all. With that in mind, I think of someone who might read certain passages of scripture and see a suggested connection between love and kindness, love and compassion or love and sacrifice. Someone might ask: What do kindness, compassion and sacrifice have to do with love? The answer is a lot. In fact, I’d go as far as saying ‘everything.’ People often think about love – both romantic and the love of God – in the abstract and miss where love meets the legendary road. As I have often said, there are many reasons Christianity is declining in the United States. Among the reasons is a failure to understand and embody the inescapable connection love has with things like kindness, compassion and sacrifice… just to name a few. What does love got to do with these things? Everything!
Merciful God, I come seeking your assistance. Make the love you have poured into my life with such generosity be a love that I share with others wherever real life is happening. This I request in the name of the one who embodied such love, Jesus Christ. Amen.
