Scripture: Luke 22:7
The Day of Unleavened Bread arrived, when the Passover had to be sacrificed.
Thought for the Day: Today is Maundy Thursday, the day in the Christian calendar when we remember the story of Jesus in the Upper Room. It was the Jewish Festival of Passover, and Jesus and his disciples were going to do what most of them had done all their lives. The Passover Meal was (and is) pretty well structured, with each component of the meal offering an opportunity to teach and claim identity. The backdrop for Passover is God’s liberating work in Egypt – God leading the people from slavery to freedom. The story of Jesus shouldn’t, in my opinion, be read separate from that story. Theologically, I believe it to be the same God, and God doing basically the same work. On this night when Jesus move to the Upper Room, and then to the Garden where he would be arrested, let us reflect on all the symbols and imagery associated with Maundy Thursday. As I think about the Passover Meal, including the bread and cup, where do you believe God is trying to liberate your life? What aspect is enslaved? Is it body, mind, spirit or a combination of all three? No matter what you are facing, I believe the God of the Exodus and the God of Maundy Thursday is at work once again this day in the work of liberating us.
Prayer: Wherever I am bound by something not of you, O Lord, I pray for your Spirit to be about the work of liberation. And while you are at work, I pray that I will do the work necessary to join you in what you are trying to accomplish. Amen.
