ECCLESIOLOGICAL ETCHING
April 19, 2022
In scripture, places of importance were marked with a stone or a pile of stones. In the 28th chapter of Genesis, Jacob camps out using a stone as a pillow. During his sleep, he has a dream of a ladder reaching to the sky. It is the passage from which we get the song: We Are Climbing Jacob’s Ladder. So moved by the experience, Jacob marks the spot the following morning using the stone. Well I almost pulled off the highway just south of the exit to Guthrie, Oklahoma, yesterday to mark the spot with something. Ok, I might be slightly overstating the experience, but I was listening to a podcast in which the speaker made a comment that was not even the main point, but it became the main point in my head. I haven’t stopped thinking about it. At some point in the near future, you’ll hear me talk about it, but not quite yet. My point in this Etching is to reflect upon those moments in life where something forever changes your life moving forward. I’m making it sound rather dramatic, but a shift in my thinking occurred as I was driving 75 mph on my way to Nebraska. Have you ever had such a moment? How did you mark it?
Holy One, no matter what I am doing or where I am going, interrupt me if you think it is important. Awaken me again and again, if necessary, so I might see a bit more clearly the life you’d like me to be living. Amen.
