ECCLESIOLOGICAL ETCHINGS
June 5, 2022
It is Pentecost Sunday, and the conclusion of our 50th Anniversary Celebration. We will find out who won the raffle, along with having a dessert auction and an opportunity to sample some other desserts (feel free to make donations for the items you taste). All the money goes to support New Church Development within our denomination. And of course, don’t forget to dress in your favorite 70’s outfit.
We wanted to give back 50 years after Cypress Creek Christian Church (before it was actually even given the name) received money from the denomination to help start the church. I guess the question raised at this moment is who or what starts churches. Is it a denomination? Is it a group of people? Or is it God? My guess is that it is all three, but my money is on God as the One who truly starts ‘a’ church, because it was God who started ‘the’ church through the Holy Spirit. It all started when the Spirit of God came over a group of confused and frightened individuals, just like the Spirit of God had come across a formless void to bring forth creation. In this way, God animated the people in the same way the Spirit of God animated the dry bones in the Book of Ezekiel. I also believe God’s Spirit is always restarting the church, reanimating dried up bodies of believers who need resurrection and renewal. In what way is God’s Spirit coming upon us this day? And what exactly might we look like if we became animated by this Spirit?
Come, Holy Spirit, and bring us new life. Come, Holy Spirit, for the world needs the Body of Christ, resurrected and ready for the sharing of love, kindness and mercy. Amen.
