Ecclesiological Etchings

Scripture: Acts 16:9-10

A vision of a man from Macedonia came to Paul during the night. He stood urging Paul, “Come over to Macedonia and help us!” Immediately after he saw the vision, we prepared to leave for the province of Macedonia, concluding that God had called us to proclaim the good news to them.

Thought for the Day: I referenced this scripture a month ago as I was preparing to leave for Greece. Today, I return to these words as one whose appreciation of the story has gained new depth. Now don’t think I’ve had a Moses-like experience, returning from the mountain with new teachings that will shape generations to come. Much of my new insight is less intellectual learning (though some of that most definitely occurred) and more emotional and intellectually ambiguous. Though I am wired to seek answers and to dig deeply for the WHY and HOW behind what appears unexplainable, there are times when relishing and appreciating the experience is enough…or at least for a while. When the Apostle Paul had his vision to make the trip to modern day Europe (Greece), I’m certain this man of great study and academic prowess had some reservations about the vision. Was it real? Does it make sense? Could it have been a bad olive I had last night? But ultimately, Paul allowed that spiritual urging to push him to risk and leap and to put himself in the unknown. Yet, this journey would lead Paul to Philippi, Thessaloniki, Berea, Corinth and Athens (and many other places). These would become some of the greatest churches within early Christianity. I strongly believe God gave us a brain, and expects us to use it. But the brain is an essential part of our visions, urging, callings and spiritual spurring that can lead us to where God needs us the most.

Prayer: Holy and Wondrous God, allow for my spiritual curiosity to match the power of your Spirit’s calling. Amen.
