Scripture: Isaiah 3:14
The LORD will enter into judgment with the elders and princes of his people: You yourselves have devoured the vineyard; the goods stolen from the poor are in your houses.
Thought for the Day: As prophets do, Isaiah cut loose on the people. As a nation, they were being judged for their arrogant and haughty ways that left the most vulnerable to fend for themselves. There are times when the words “vineyard” or “wine” or “vines” are metaphors, but in this case, these folks (elders and princes) have taken away what the law required them to leave in the vineyard for the poor, widow, orphan and immigrant. It was called gleaning, and faith required every person who owned land to leave a portion untouched for anyone who might need food. It wasn’t a suggestion or simply encouraged. It was the law within the Jewish nation, and it was done so that no one had to beg and feel worthless. It made sure no one was left behind. Of course, just because it was the law and the right thing to do, there were those who …applauded themselves, walked with their chins in the air, flirted with their eyes, tiptoed as they walk, feet jingling… (3:16). The “elders and princes,” for whatever reason, came to believe they didn’t need to concern themselves with the problems of others. Or maybe they believed they had worked hard, and to simply give away a portion of what they had would encourage laziness. Or maybe they regarded their land as God’s gift to them and the suffering of others as God’s judgment. There were all kinds of ways for them to justify their selfishness, but in the end, it was greed and unrighteous behavior that destroyed their nation. I don’t know about you, but the ancient words of a prophet spoken in an entirely different context can still make me squirm.
Prayer: You ask for each of us to be generous as you are generous, O Lord. We are not to ask questions or make judgment, but find ways of providing for those who would otherwise be lost. Wherever we can provide for the spiritual, emotional and physical needs of others, let us do so with a willing spirit that truly finds joy as we join you in kingdom living. Amen.
