ECCLESIOLOGICAL ETCHING
December 17, 2021
I was teaching a Bible Study a number of years ago and asked the group a question: When was the last time someone said to you, “I love you”? Some of the folks were quick to give examples from earlier that day or a few days before. But one older woman, a bit of a quiet recluse, said she could not remember the last time she heard those words. That was painful to hear. With that said, I am always cautious not to say those words indiscriminately as if they were just another way of saying, “Good-bye.” They carry with them power. How often might those words be a treasured gift to the ears of another human being, especially when they are offered in a spirit of authenticity?
O Holy God, give me eyes to see and a heart that perceives the needs and yearnings of those around me. Amen.
