Prayer for the New Year

For some, there is a fear this year will be a replay of the last. For some, there is a heaviness as this new year will be explored alone because of death or loss. For some, there is great uncertainty as change is coming, and with it a cloudy and precarious future. O God of every moment – past, present and future – we pause before moving too far into this new period of life. We pause and pray, acknowledging the baggage we bring with us. Where we can unpack and leave behind what is unhelpful and unhealthy, assist us in this good work. Where we can learn from the past, bringing wisdom to bear upon the present, we seek your Spirit’s guidance. Where we can lean into hope, the hope of the Gospel, we seek a visionary perspective capable of drawing us into your dream for all creation. May this prayer, alongside the ongoing prayers of all those beseeching your help, be a means by which we tap into your relentless and reckless love. Amen.
