ECCLESIOLOGICAL ETCHINGFebruary 23, 2022
Last week, Cypress Creek Christian Church received a card from our friends at Kirkwood South Christian Church. Some of you have met Joni Sutton who serves as their Senior Minister. The card started with the words:
The members of Kirkwood South Christian Church had the great privilege of praying for you during our worship service last Sunday.
I was humbled by the note, and my heart was touched for a couple of reasons. First, it was so kind of them to take time and specifically pray for our congregation. In ministry, we often find ourselves in a bubble, disconnected from all that is happening in the lives of other churches. The people of Kirkwood South did not think in those terms. They took the time. Second, the specific words of having “the great privilege of praying for you” was a gift. In Paul’s Second Letter to the Church in Corinth, he wrote about the Church in Macedonia, and how those in the church were begging to participate in the work of God. For some folks, the call to serve (in whatever capacity) burns so hot that simply doing it is not an option. They are going to be there early, pleading to do more than anyone would expect, and saying with all seriousness what a privilege it is. Today, I give thanks for all who have given this passionate witness, among them, the folks at Kirkwood South Christian Church.
Grant us, Lord of Heaven and Earth, the humility to recognize with gratitude those who give so generously of who they are. As those of us on the receiving end of such amazing grace, guide our thankfulness into tangible acts of love we share with others. Amen.
