Scripture
: Leviticus 1:14
If the offering for the LORD is an entirely burned offering from the birds, you can present your offering from the doves or pigeons.

Thought for the Day
: I’m pretty sure a number of folks roll their eyes when they see an Etching from Leviticus. It is one of those books in the Bible many want to skip, if not remove. And if I would have included the next few verses, the squeamish might have found themselves making a trip to the bathroom. But the burnt offering of a bird is the third option available among the burnt offerings. For those who can afford it, a large animal from the herd might be chosen. Those who are looking for something in the middle range, there is an option to choose something from the flock. But for those who cannot afford much or anything at all, there is the dove or pigeon. You could buy one for sacrifice, or if you had a net, you could probably capture one. The animal brought forth from the herd or flock had to be without blemish, representing a person’s finest and most expensive animal. But in the bird option, there are no specific restrictions. Whatever you brought was fine. It is interesting how, even in Israel’s earliest post-slavery experience, a way was made for everyone to be involved. It didn’t matter who you were or what resources you had, there was a pathway made for your participation. From the very beginning of Israel’s formal worship, belonging mattered. In our worship, it is one thing to say all are welcome. It is something very different to have a system in place where all can fully participate and feel as if they belong.

Prayer
: Holy and Magnificent God, from ancient times to now, you have always made a way for humanity to find an unimpeded road into your presence. You never wanted title, wealth, age or any other distinction to hinder one’s approach. Thank you for continuing to make a way for us today. Amen.
