ECCLESIOLOGICAL ETCHING
February 19, 2022
In Romans, The Apostle Paul wrote, “God’s gifts and calling can’t be taken back.” I am baffled again and again when people will say things like, “Well God use to love the Jews, but that was before Jesus” or “They were once children of God, but no more.” There are so many theological problems with that kind of talk. Among them, how are we to trust God? If God suddenly has a dramatic shift in defining who is in and who is out, how does that build trust for the future. Oh sure, I might be one of the new insiders, but how can I have any confidence in what next week will bring. I don’t really want to worship a God who fluctuates, is unreliable or has wild mood swings. That’s not very comforting. God’s promises are irrevocable, and passages like “For God so loved the world” is not going to change to “God so loved only a portion of the world.”
I trust you, O Merciful One! I trust your love that remains unconditional and unrelenting, no matter the mood swings of humanity. Your consistency is our peace. Amen.
