Prayer for the Week
The Season of Lent is on the horizon, a season of honest self inquiry, confession, repentance and the hard work of reconciliation. What would it mean for world leaders to quiet themselves, discern values other than power and egoism, and reverse their inhumane practices? What would it mean for those around the globe who feel like pawns in a chess game played by the dangerously insecure? You have a dream for us, O God, and it is a dream for all humanity. You have a dream where the instruments of war are reshaped into tools that cultivate life. You have a dream where diverse nations gather around a common table and break bread together. You have a dream, yet we have witnessed the twisting and deforming of your dream. We have witnessed those who seize upon the beautiful rhetoric of your dream, only to use it as cover for their acts of exploitation and injustice. Help us to live your dream of kindness, justice and peace within our own sphere of influence. Let the dream we expect in others first be embodied within us, and if it requires for us to do the hard work of honest self inquiry, confessions, repentance and reconciliation, may it be so. Amen.
