Prayer for the Week: We speak a word of thanksgiving in a time when there is so much cause for distress and consternation. We speak a word of thanksgiving, not in an attempt to deny or ignore, but out of a deep-seated need to give thanks. We speak a word of thanksgiving in the belief that no amount of violence or destruction can eclipse what is good and life-giving. We speak a word of thanksgiving in an attempt to cling to something worthy of our appreciation. We speak a word of thanksgiving, O Gracious God, as the alternative is not the life we wish to live. With that said, we acknowledge all those who are struggling right not to find even one reason to give thanks. The lostness and fear are real in the lives of so many, and we do not express this gratitude to be condescending. Gratitude is inescapably tied to hope, and hope is the doorway to a future where all of humanity has reason to be thankful. We speak now a word of thanksgiving unto you, O God. Amen.
