Prayer for the Week
Merciful Mother, Holy Father, Gentle Parent, Magnificent Maker – so many designations we attached to you, yet not one even begins to capture the essence of who you are and what you do. Forgive us when a name or title becomes more like an idol, an effigy that we can hold and conform to our wishes. Forgive us when we do not allow you to be you. Forgive us when we dismiss you for showing up in the unexpected or reject you for expecting us to show up where we’d rather not. Forgive us, as you always do, and then stretch our rather restrictive and brittle assumptions that have attempted to confine you. Thank you for being the Holy Other who will not be the god who simply endorses what we want but the God who will help us to want what you seek to endorse. Amen.
