In Genesis 28, we find the story of Jacob’s Ladder, a dream Jacob had of a ladder stretching into the heavens. You may have learned a song in Sunday School years ago about climbing Jacob’s Ladder. Well, according to some ancient Jewish teachings, Jacob’s ladder is a symbol of human life. We live firmly rooted on the earth, but we strive and stretch to know and live the high values of heaven. In a similar way, Jesus announced the manifestation of God’s Kin(g)dom here on earth. The Kin(g)dom manifests itself when faithful people live firmly in this world, while always striving for the ways of heaven. What are the values and ideals you associate with heaven? How might you embody them as you walk this earth?
Help me be your bridge, Merciful God, between what is and what could be. Amen.
