Ecclesiological Etchings

ECCLESIOLOGICAL ETCHINGS
September 11, 2022

Today in worship, we are going to be looking at the 12th chapter of Romans. It is a wonderful section, emphasizing the transformed life and what that life looks like both inside the community of faith and outside. Paul writes, “Contribute to the needs of the saints; extend hospitality to strangers.” I was intrigued to learn that the Greek word we translate as “contribute” is the verb form of the word “Koinonia.” The noun is usually translated as community or fellowship. So I guess the sentence could be translated as “fellowshipping for the sake of the saints…” It adds a depth to what is meant by fellowship. It is more than just folks hanging out together. It is done with a recognition of individual needs. To “contribute” is to act together to make sure all folks have what is needed and everyone can experience their standing as one of God’s beloved.

Holy and Hospitable God, may all the things we do as a faith community be received by others as welcoming and affirming of their place as one of your beloved. Amen.
