ECCLESIOLOGICAL ETCHINGS

I love Jesus! I mean it, but there are a couple of questions that arise in the minds of many people when they hear that statement: 1. What does it mean to love Jesus? -and- 2. So what? I sort of find those questions challenging? If someone speaks about loving a spouse or a child, I don’t think most people would ask, “So what does that mean?” -or- “So what?” But in Christian history, we have talked a lot about love in a sort of nebulous way or automatically assumed everyone knew exactly what we meant. So what does it mean? To me? To you? If someone says, “So what?” how would you respond? In my opinion, how we answer the questions is at the heart of the Gospel. How we answer it is where the proverbial rubber meets the road. How we answer it is what the world longs to know.
Continue to guide me, O Holy One, as I grow in my understanding of and capacity to love. Amen.
