ECCLESIOLOGICAL ETCHINGS

This Sunday, we will begin a series based on Psalm 1:3 — “They are like trees planted by streams of water, which yield their fruit in its season, and their leaves do not wither.” The people (“they” in this verse) are described in vs. 1-2, where we learn that the author is referring to those who delight in the law and teaching of the Lord, and not those who follow the path of sinners. The law described here is not like our federal, state, and local laws. Though the word can be translated as law, the Torah within Judaism was more often understood as instruction or guidance. A Rabbi told me years ago that the Torah is not like STOP signs or ONE WAY signs, but more like a map and an occasional guardrail as we are trying to follow the map. It is presented sometimes as what we are not to do, but at the end of the day, it is seeking to direct people on a path toward life, health, and joy for all. Even if you’re just beginning the journey, and the destination appears far off, choosing the ways of God is like being a tree planted by a stream of water. You’re never far from the sustenance that forms you in the way of Jesus. My hope is that you’ll spend some time reflecting on the words from Psalm 1, and in the weeks ahead, read some of your fellow church members who will be reflecting on what it means to find living water.
O Living Water, O Sacred Provision for the Soul, lead us to those places where our roots can feast on that which inspires faith, hope, and a greater capacity to love. Amen.
