ECCLESIOLOGICAL ETCHINGS

It will all come together at a meal later this morning as we celebrate World Communion Sunday. Soon, churches all over the globe will focus attention on a table found in the center of their worship space. It usually isn’t an extravagant table, though it will hold elements filled copiously with meaning. We will speak of God’s grace revealed in those simple elements, and we will pray for the experience at the Table to make everyone feel welcome, an embodied expression of the Gospel. I pray that everyone gathering around those tables, near and far, will be reminded of the life modeled in Jesus, and in doing so, will choose to do as the Apostle Paul suggested, to live one’s “…life in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ” (Philippians 1:27).
Where bread is broken and a cup is shared, we believe you will be present to teach and encourage us in the ways of welcome, O Lord. Amen.
