Ecclesiological Etchings

ECCLESIOLOGICAL ETCHINGS
October 25, 2026
Yesterday, I wrote in my Etching about being open to the possibility of having a God sighting or God encounter, even on a Saturday. Well, today is Sunday, and I think back to a study that was done close to 20 years ago that asked active church people whether they expected to “meet” God in worship. And to the surprise of many, only around 1/3 of people said they expected to meet God in worship. As I said in yesterday’s Etching, there can be a self-fulfilling prophecy when we convince ourselves, consciously or unconsciously, that we won’t, for whatever reason, have a God moment. Again, I don’t want to limit my expectations to Sunday morning worship alone, but as I get going on this Sunday morning, I am being intentional with my prayers, and I invite you to do the same.

Where any expectation or assumption has me putting a perimeter around what is possible with you, Lord God, I pray for the Holy Spirit to knock some holes in those walls I have built. Widen my awareness that I might see you and grow in my relationship with you. This is my request on this Sunday morning. Amen.
