Scripture: Psalm 104:24-25
O Lord, how manifold are your works! In wisdom you have made them all; the earth is full of your creatures. Yonder is the sea, great and wide, creeping things innumerable are there, living things both small and great.
Thought for the Day: Today is the day that the Lord has made! It is our third annual Blessing of the Animals and Stuffed Animals. I love this event, and I love all the people and creatures we meet. I haven’t a clue what I will have held by the end of the day, but I pretty much guarantee you that it will include things that are furry, slimy and scaly. This event is a wonderful opportunity, alongside Creekfest, to meet our neighbors. But it also gives us the opportunity to acknowledge a significant part of our theology. The Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) has always honored and respected all aspects of creation. We echo the poetry of Genesis that claims that it is all Good. For many people, they have heard a Christianity that has dismissed the beauty of creation and dishonored God by abusing the gift that is life. Many people appreciate our alternative vision, for as you know, their pets (dogs, bunnies, cats, turtles, ferrets, snakes, birds, sugar gliders, etc.) are more than pets. They are family, and we like to publicly acknowledge our belief that God celebrates the relationship they have with these animals.
Prayer: Lord God, for your magnificent and diverse creation, we give you thanks! May we respect and honor each creature that is a source of delight, companionship and joy in the lives of our sisters and brothers. Amen.
