Ecclesiological Etchings

Scripture: Luke 3:3-6
John went into all the region around the Jordan, proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins, as it is written in the book of the words of the prophet Isaiah, “The voice of one crying out in the wilderness: ‘Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.  Every valley shall be filled, and every mountain and hill shall be made low, and the crooked shall be made straight, and the rough ways made smooth; and all flesh shall see the salvation of God.’”

Thought for the Day: As we find ourselves in a new year, it is good to be re-reminded of the ancient words of the prophet of Isaiah that were spoken by John the Baptist. There are always obstacles in life, and some of them might seem insurmountable. Yet amidst these wilderness experiences, there is the voice of one calling forth a different vision – a vision where every overwhelming mountain and impassable valley are made flat; the crooked and rough places are made straight and smooth. Let us also remember that because we are part of a faith community, we are part of the construction company called upon to help level out the impassable parts of other people’s lives. In this New Year, let us take seriously the idea of being church with one another and for one another.

Prayer: When I’m at an impasse, O Lord, provide me a community of people who will help to make a way.  When others find themselves facing great obstacles, call me to their side.  Amen.
