Ecclesiological Etchings

Scripture: Colossians 4:12
Epaphras, who is one of you, a servant of Christ Jesus, greets you. He is always wrestling in his prayers on your behalf, so that you may stand mature and fully assured in everything that God wills.

Thought for the Day: I had a very uncomfortable moment early yesterday. It was MLK Day, and I had the opportunity to sleep in. It is not something I do very often, but for some reason I was able to really sleep until about 7:45am. I puttered around the house, got on the elliptical, watched a little bit of Property Brothers, unloaded the dishwasher and read an article. It was about 10:30am when I heard an unexpected sound. It was Monday, but since it was MLK Day, I didn’t figure there would be trash pickup. I was wrong, and by the time I ran to the garage, they were gone. As I came back into the house, that’s when I begin to feel an uneasiness within my spirit. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was assassinated in Memphis, TN, and he was there to stand with striking sanitation workers who were seeking change to what had been dangerous working conditions, poor wages and abuse. Dr. King, a minister, was murdered while trying to help garbage collectors. On the day to honor Dr. King, the garbage collectors were working hard and this minister was not. There seemed to be an uncomfortable irony in the air. My discomfort was probably a good thing as it made me appreciate those who do the difficult servant’s task of garbage disposal, and how many like them are not recognized or appreciated for their good and necessary work among us.

Prayer: Lord, help me to be more like Paul who recognized servants, including Epaphras, who served among the communities where he worked. Such people are desperately needed, but so often forgotten. Whether we see them or not, we are blessed because of them. Amen.
