Ecclesiological Etchings

Scripture: Philippians 2:5-8
In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus: Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage; rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death— even death on a cross!

Thought for the Day: On this day in 475AD, the Byzantine Emperor sent a letter to all the churches declaring the Monophysite Christological position as the true position of the faith. Monophysite said that at the time of the Incarnation (God taking on human form), there was only one nature  – the divine nature. This was in contrast to Dyophysitism, the belief that there were still two separate natures – divine and human. Of course, there was also Miaphysitism which argued a slightly different position on the nature question. The whole conversation is rather fascinating, and there are some unique theological implications for each one of these positions. With that said, is my ability to live the life of faith hindered if I believe in one nature or two natures or sort of both? I personally enjoy the work of theology, and the church must be very diligent in its quest for truth and understanding. Yet at the end of the day, the study of Christianity should never lose sight of the work of Christianity. Maybe this is the reason a growing number of younger people are ok with differences of opinion on certain theological topics. They will enjoy a lively discussion, and then get to the work of serving Christ by serving their neighbors.

Prayer: As we debate and discuss – as we share thoughts and listen – help us to be ever mindful of your call to humble service. Help us, Lord, to practice the life of Jesus even in our disagreeing. Amen.
