Ecclesiological Etchings

Scripture: Acts 15:32-33
Judas and Silas, who were themselves prophets, said much to encourage and strengthen the believers. After they had been there for some time, they were sent off in peace by the believers to those who had sent them.

Thought for the Day: After the great Council in Jerusalem in which Paul’s ministry to the Gentiles was finally recognized as legitimate by the original Apostles, a decision is made to send representatives with Paul and Barnabas. Judas and Silas are sent with a letter that speaks on behalf of the church in Jerusalem, but as they go forth, these two men provide encouragement and strength to those they meet. The Greek word we translate as encourage is: Episteirzo. One way of translating it is: to make very firm. This is a helpful picture of what encouragement should be. It is more than cheerleaders standing on the sidelines of life. It is to help build the foundation on which one can grow and to better respond to the purpose God has for them. There are a number of people whose purpose is to be an encourager, and they are helping to make the ground on which others stand stronger. From that firmer foundation, they are better able to take the leap of faith.

Prayer: If I can encourage, give me the words, O Lord. If I need encouragement, please provide me one who can make the ground I stand on a bit firmer for the work that lies ahead of me. Amen.
