Ecclesiological Etchings

One Service Sunday

Scripture: Galatians 6:1-2
Brothers and sisters, if a person is caught doing something wrong, you who are spiritual should restore someone like this with a spirit of gentleness. Watch out for yourselves so you won’t be tempted too. Carry each other’s burdens and so you will fulfill the law of Christ.

Thought for the Day: You have a responsibility to the faith community. Too often the church portrays its members in a passive way, except when it comes to the offering tray.  Too often lay people are given the task of sitting and watching, but Paul places the responsibility of community care and cohesiveness on all those who are spiritual, or it could be translated as received the Spirit.  This is not some special group within the faith community who have reached some high level of spiritual knowledge, but everyone.  The work is not done with arrogance or a sense of superiority, but with gentleness.  Each person is willing to carry the burdens of the other.  The image of a church where everyone is sitting passively in the pews is over.

Prayer: Help me, O Heavenly Redeemer, to see others as sisters and brothers who will share with me in this journey of faith.  Amen.
