Ecclesiological Etchings

Scripture: Exodus 32:1-4
The people saw that Moses was taking a long time to come down from the mountain. They gathered around Aaron and said to him, “Come on! Make us gods who can lead us. As for this man Moses who brought us up out of the land of Egypt, we don’t have a clue what has happened to him.” Aaron said to them, “All right, take out the gold rings from the ears of your wives, your sons, and your daughters, and bring them to me.” So all the people took out the gold rings from their ears and brought them to Aaron. He collected them and tied them up in a cloth. Then he made a metal image of a bull calf, and the people declared, “These are your gods, Israel, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt!”

Thought for the Day: How does our inability to be patient lead to idolatry? The ways of God are rarely immediate or magical. I don’t believe I have ever experienced the right words producing a puff of smoke, followed by the revealing of my bidding. In scripture, we come across the words wait upon the Lord on numerous occasions. From my theological perspective, we are waiting on the Lord who is often waiting on us to do what has been requested of us. God appears to have chosen flawed and feeble humans as the primary agents of the Kingdom. For that reason, patience is mandatory… it’s going to take time. Keeping that in mind is important, especially as we feel frustration and discontent bubbling up within us. These emotions have us looking away from God and toward other quick fixes that are rarely of God. In our passion perverted by a lack of patience, we are often kneeling at the wrong alter and paying homage to the wrong god.

Prayer: Keep me centered, patient and calm, O Loving Creator. I must constantly work on keeping to the long and often lonely path of faithfulness. Amen.
