Ecclesiological Etchings

Scripture: Acts 12:5
While Peter was held in prison, the church offered earnest prayer to God for him.

Thought for the Day: Pray! I don’t know if it was original to CS Lewis, but he said:

I pray because I can’t help myself.
I pray because I’m helpless.
I pray because the need
flows out of me all the time-
waking and sleeping.
It doesn’t change God-
it changes me.

I wonder if the lack of prayer even among highly committed Christians is because they fear Lewis’ final thought. It might just change us. A church in prayer is a church that should never seek for God to bend toward its will, but for the church to submit to God’s hopes and dreams for the world. Are you ready to really pray?

Prayer: I come before you in prayer not because you are in need, but because I need you. Holy and Magnificent God, meet me in this time. Speak to my heart your vision of mercy and kindness, love and forgiveness. May these words spill into my life not only as gifts for me, but as tools for me to use in my daily life. I need you for I feel lost without you. I pray because it is my lifeline to you. Amen.
