Scripture: Romans 5:6
While we were still weak, at the right moment, Christ died for ungodly people.
Thought for the Day: I have watched too many people, and I probably should point a finger back at myself, who have nodded upon hearing these words from Romans…nodding as they thought about all those ungodly people. Here’s the thing, I’m pretty sure Paul wanted us to start close to home when it came to our definition of the ungodly. Paul wanted us to imagine that upon opening the dictionary to the word ungodly, that next to the definition, was our picture. Paul wasn’t trying to make folks feel bad about themselves, but to remove the arrogance and haughtiness that too often lies just under the surface of good church folks. In the Christian walk, our job is not all that complicated. We should never see ourselves above another human being. We are called to love unconditionally, even recklessly, and leave everything else to God. That’s hard because deep down many of us don’t believe God should love the people that God chooses to love.
Prayer: With humility and joy, I offer my thankfulness for the generosity of your love, O Lord who recklessly gave of self for all of humanity. I am awed and blessed by the unconditional nature of this gift. Amen.
