Ecclesiological Etchings

Scripture: Luke 1:72-75
Thus he has shown the mercy promised to our ancestors, and has remembered his holy covenant, the oath that he swore to our ancestor Abraham, to grant us that we, being rescued from the hands of our enemies, might serve him without fear, in holiness and righteousness before him all our days.

Thought for the Day: I like the idea of ‘showing’ mercy. In our present culture, we tend to associate mercy with a verbal expression of forgiveness. To extend mercy with words can be an amazing gift to someone who is feeling guilty or ashamed, but often the words are not congruent with the actions of the one who is offering that verbal mercy.  The prophet Zechariah (not to be confused with the father of John who is singing the above song) says to the people that they are to show kindness and mercy.  This comes as an alternative to what they have been doing which was a lot of empty words and rituals.  Zechariah, the father of John, joyfully sings of a God whose words are not void of meaning, but reflect the actions of the One who is merciful.

Prayer: O Righteous One, with gratitude in my heart and voice, I sing of your merciful acts that have changed my life.  Amen.
