ECCLESIOLOGICAL ETCHINGS
January 1, 2026
Happy New Year! Maybe I should view the new year as an opportunity to make a real commitment to change in my life. And if I were to do so, I would be joining many people as they make resolutions for the new year. It does feel like a threshold moment, but I am one who tends to do self-reflection and bring about needed change in moments of awareness. It’s one thing to say, “I need more sleep.” Many of us could say those words 92% of the time, but there are moments when things come together in such a way that the need and the opportunity merge in an unmistakable way. If you’ve made a commitment to something important as you enter 2026, go for it! I wish you the best. At the same time, don’t view this day as having any more opportunity or special mojo for making goals achievable. Instead, look past the date and seek the alignment of need and opportunity… and maybe be mindful of God’s encouraging presence that helps make even the difficult possible.

For this new year, O Maker of Sacred Opportunity, I pray for awareness and not simply for what tradition seems to always tell me. Amen.
