Ecclesiological Etchings

ECCLESIOLOGICAL ETCHINGS
January 7, 2023

Tomorrow, we will have our annual Camel Parade (10am from Meyer Park) as it is Epiphany Sunday. The experience is based on the story from Matthew 2, where we read how the magi came from the east on their way to Jerusalem. Upon arriving, they asked, “Where…” Let’s state upfront all the jokes about men not asking for directions, and then let us move on to an even more curious part of the story—religious people asking a question that was not rhetorical. It was a genuine question with which they demonstrated vulnerability, and in doing so, they revealed how they were not the most knowledgeable ones in the room. Have you ever felt like you needed to preface a question with the words, “I know there is no such thing as a stupid question, but this might be the exception to the rule”? More often, we just don’t ask the question. For some reason, we often have a hard time revealing our lack of knowledge, our confusion, or our doubts because we view faith on a scale from weak to strong, from inadequate to good, from ignorant to enlightened. When in fact, I think faith exists within a sphere where the more you know, the less you are able to grasp. Yet there is a strange peace you find as you fall even more deeply in love with this Holy Mystery.

Let my questions rise on your Spirit, O Gentle God, as I am lifted into places where my perspective might change and consequently generate even more questions. Amen.
