Ecclesiological Etchings

ECCLESIOLOGICAL ETCHINGS
January 11, 2023

Have you ever been over-the-top excited for something until you realized what it required? On the surface, it appeared fabulous and exhilarating. You couldn’t wait to throw yourself into it 100%. And then you were confronted with more of the details, including what would be demanded of you.

A friend of mine has a daughter who saw ice skating on TV and desperately wanted to become the next Olympic Gold Medalist. And then, after investing quite a bit of money in skates, two outfits, special warm-up pants, and lessons, she lost interest when she left her first practice unable to do a triple axel. She was done!

What happens when God casts a dream before us, and we are all excited until the first day of hard work doesn’t go as planned? So often we make the assumption that if it is God’s Dream, then it will happen with very little effort. I think about Moses catching God’s vision of a people being liberated from slavery. He spent the rest of his life moving them ever closer to the Promised Land, yet never arriving there himself. Sometimes the dreams we receive are not ours to finish, but only to nurture for a time and then pass on to someone else.

Giver of Sacred and Liberating Dreams, foster within me a heart willing to receive your dream and to guide it however long you need me to do so. May it always be your dream, and I its steward. Amen.
