Scripture: Luke 3:15-16
The people were filled with expectation, and everyone wondered whether John might be the Christ. John replied to them all, “I baptize you with water, but the one who is more powerful than me is coming. I’m not worthy to loosen the strap of his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.”
Thought for the Day: How many people would have said, “You’re right, I am the Christ”? How many egos would have enjoyed the suggesting that they were the Christ? John does not simply play it down. He obliterates any thoughts to that possibility. “I’m not worthy to loosen the strap on his sandals.” In our current culture where humility is rare at best, especially among people of power, it is jaw-dropping to witness humility. John had a very important role to play, but at no point did he allow himself to accept recognition or take credit for something he was not. I doubt too many people would have faulted John had he played down any idea that he was the Christ, but then played up his own accomplishments. That would have been acceptable in most people’s thinking, but John wants to make sure that Jesus is the only one in the spotlight when the moment comes. I wonder how often my ego has attempted to take some of the spotlight away from Jesus? A question for me to ponder this day…
Prayer: Provide me with a calling, a ministry that serves you, O Spirit of Fire. Allow it to burn deep within me so that both my direction and convictions are ignited by you. Amidst my growing passion, let me know my task without ever drawing attention to myself over you. Amen.
