Ecclesiological Etchings

ECCLESIOLOGICAL ETCHINGS

Today, as we conclude our series on Mindfulness, we will focus our attention on curiosity, which I will suggest is one of the more important attributes when it comes to being a human being. With that in mind, I invite you to ponder the words of Albert Einstein:

“The important thing is not to stop questioning. Curiosity has its own reason for existence. One cannot help but be in awe when he contemplates the mysteries of eternity, of life, of the marvelous structure of reality. It is enough if one tries merely to comprehend a little of this mystery each day.”

When scripture refers to God as the Alpha and the Omega, not simply the beginning of what we might comprehend as existence, but the beginning and end of everything that exists outside of time, it sort of seems rather arrogant for someone to say, “I think I know God.” I believe we can know attributes of God, or at least finite expressions of eternal attributes. What we call love is, in my opinion, only a glimpse of a mysterious power and beauty and life-energy that we as humans try to encapsulate with the four-letter word LOVE. Yet when scripture says that God is love, then I must believe that the most powerful love I have known is only a sliver of what is possible. Suddenly, my curiosity and imagination are running. Jesus represents what this love looks like when it takes on flesh, and I believe it is the fullest expression I can comprehend. But to think that there is nothing more to God is, from my perspective, a bit of a mistake. If I am attaching the title GOD to something, I need that thing I call GOD to be something much more than I am or what I can imagine.

Thank you, Holy One of Heaven and Earth and Everywhere Else, for you have chosen to make yourself known. Maybe what I can know is only a smidgen of what is enveloped in mystery and eternity, yet that is enough. For there, I know I am seen, loved, and forever welcomed as one of your beloved. Amen.
