Scripture: Luke 5:4
When he finished speaking to the crowds, he said to Simon, “Row out farther, into the deep water, and drop your nets for a catch.”
Thought for the Day: Jesus was the master of using interactive techniques to teach an important point. Simon and others will become those who toss out the Gospel net and catch those who find themselves caught in the web of love and mercy. It’s interesting how Simon (along with James and John) were skeptical of going back out and fishing. They had been out all night, and why would it make any difference now. Could it be that their doubt and pessimism was a reflection of what Luke, the Gospel writer, saw within his own community. Not in regard to actual fishing, but his community’s willingness (or lack there of) to go and share the Gospel. It appears that we do not always trust the Good News of God’s unconditional love made real in Jesus. Maybe we won’t catch anything when we go out, but it is not our place to question the when or the results. We are simply asked to love as Jesus loved.
Prayer: Send me out, O Lord, even when my doubts are many. Send me and equip me with your love and mercy, for they are what every heart yearns to encounter. Amen.
