Scripture: Luke 9:7-9
Herod the ruler heard about everything that was happening. He was confused because some people were saying that John had been raised from the dead, others that Elijah had appeared, and still others that one of the ancient prophets had come back to life. Herod said, “I beheaded John, so now who am I hearing about?” Herod wanted to see him.
Thought for the Day: Even those who feel threatened are strangely drawn to Jesus. It’s as if there is something within every human being, no matter who they are, that feels a tug toward embodied love. This expression of love calls into question a person’s way of living; it might cause a moral restlessness with its breath-taking idealism; it might demand change to one’s core values of life. This tug raises questions, brings a moral restlessness and even demands change, yet just because it’s tug is there does not mean everyone allows themselves to be pulled into this new way of living. In fact, we all probably push back in one way or another. Whether we recognize it or not, there are always internal struggles occurring between our current life and the life Jesus has put on display. Herod wanted to see, according to the scripture. Why? Maybe it was nothing more than to see one more rebel he would be putting to death? Or maybe, there was something deep within that very flawed man that was drawn to the beauty of unconditional love.
Prayer: Thank you, Jesus! Thank you, Lord! Thank you for presenting to the world the magnificent love from which all good things come. Amen.
