Scripture: Luke 9:57-58
As Jesus and his disciples traveled along the road, someone said to him, “I will follow you wherever you go.” Jesus replied, “Foxes have dens and the birds in the sky have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head.”
Thought for the Day: These words of scripture are part of the sermon text for tomorrow. Like last Sunday’s text, the phrase “Son of Man” is used by Jesus to indirectly describe himself. It is believed that Jesus was using a well known cultural adage about the creatures of the world having homes, but human beings are homeless. Jesus borrows the idea to describe the Son of Man (last Sunday, I spoke of the Son of Man as a title for the Ideal Human), and how God’s perfect expression of what it means to be a human being will find himself rejected and without a home. It points to the countercultural nature of the Jesus-life, and it is not only a description of Jesus’ personal reality, but it’s his way of breaking the bad news to his followers. His reality will be their reality if they choose to truly follow. For our ears, these words are incredibly uncomfortable. I’m not suggesting we all become homeless, but to dismiss these words as nothing but a pretty metaphor is to miss their challenge. If my life of faith only gives me cultural accolades and economic security, then maybe I need to revisit Jesus and his calling.
Prayer: O Heavenly Father, O Incarnate Christ, challenge me with the words of scripture. Do not allow me to avoid or dismiss what can be very discomforting words. Above all things, I want to follow in the ways of Jesus. May today provide opportunities to grow through challenge. Amen.
