ECCLESIOLOGICAL ETCHING

In 1 Kings 8:27, King Solomon made a rather profound statement. He said, “But will God indeed dwell on the earth? Even heaven and the highest heaven cannot contain you, much less this house that I have built!” King Solomon had gathered the people of Israel for the dedication of the glorious new temple. It was a magnificent structure for its day, and it inspired people’s spiritual imaginations and built up their sense of communal pride. There was great potential for Solomon’s ego to get out of check at that point in his life, but it did not. Though he and his people had achieved a great milestone in their nation’s history, Solomon realized that any structure constructed with human hands would pale in comparison to the One whose existence first stirred the dreams of those who would build the temple.
Mighty God, may my life celebrate and honor you above all other things. Amen.
