When we join John in these verses (John 12:20-36), things are changing and starting to move faster. Jesus’ earthly ministry has ended and the time for his death and resurrection has arrived. We read how the grain of wheat must fall to the earth and die in order to bear much fruit. Likewise, Jesus’ death bears the fruit of a new community of faith.
This community of faith…our community of faith… is called to follow Jesus not just by reading and studying His teachings. Most importantly, we are to adopt Jesus’ model of love. It is a love for the ages. It is a love for all ages. It is a love for all people.
Jesus knew the time had come to realize the purpose of his ministry. As God’s name had been glorified in Jesus’ ministry, His name would be glorified again in Jesus’ death and resurrection.
Is now the time to realize the purpose of our ministry? Will we model His love with reckless abandon? What do we need to get rid of in our lives in order to bear much fruit?
Precious God, shine your light in our hearts and lives as we seek to remove all that would keep us from living into your unconditional, undisputable, non-negotiable love. May we make it our life’s ministry to share that unconditional love with everyone. Amen.
