Scripture: Psalm 105:1
Give thanks to the LORD; call upon his name; make his deeds known to all people!
Thought for the Day: Today I give thanks for many reasons, but I must confess my thankfulness as this is the 20th anniversary of my diagnosis. Within a few weeks of getting the official news, I sat down with a volunteer at the MS Society who had MS. This individual was a minister who had been fired from his church because of the disability brought on by the MS, he was confined to a wheelchair, and he was horribly depressed. This was the person assigned to me, and I was certain I was looking at my future… was it 6 months, two years or five years. He even told me how most folks with MS were on disability within 10-12 years. Today, as I hit the 20 year mark, I give thanks to all the people who have come alongside me over the years to offer an alternative vision; I give thanks to all those who pedaled the MS 150 or did a fundraising walk for the MS Society; I give thanks for people who have prayed for me on a daily basis; I give thanks for a spouse who remained committed through a dark period; I give thanks to God who taught me to believe that life could go on even if the MS impacted me more significantly. And amidst the gratitude, I recognize how others are not doing as well as I have done. It isn’t because God likes me more. There are many unknowns when it comes to MS, and different people respond differently to the medications. And so I give thanks for the researchers who continue to believe there are better treatments to be discovered.
Prayer: For all those who grace our lives, Lord God, let us give thanks. For all those who care enough to act tangibly, let us give thanks! Amen.
