ECCLESIOLOGICAL ETCHINGS

So when I have some free time, I’ve been watching an episode of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters on AppleTV. Trust me, you won’t see it winning any awards, but I have always been a fan of the old giant monster movies, and this show includes Godzilla and King Kong. The writing has been a bit clunky and predictable, but I still enjoy it. There was a line that caught my attention just recently. One of the main characters said, “Sometimes you call the best person. Other times, you call the right person.” It sure got me to thinking about how we judge who would be the best, and then we are surprised at who God calls. I don’t know if God would describe it as “the right person,” but when you think about all the people God invited to give leadership or act on behalf of God, they were rarely on anyone’s Top Ten List. God often sees something that others can’t see. In fact, God often sees something that we can’t see in ourselves.
Holy Mystery, O Gracious God, thank you for all those whom you have called from what the world would have described as unimpressive and lacking in talent. Empowered by your Spirit, these individuals have often provided the most impactful witness to the Gospel. Amen.
