ECCLESIOLOGICAL ETCHINGS
May 21, 2026
I had just typed a handful of words, and though my fingers were not on the correct keys and what I typed was nonsense, my computer attempted to show how smart it was and correct my mistake. The only problem is that what it believed to be the correct sentence was not close and sort of inappropriate even for my Etchings. Is anyone else a fixer? There are times when I am listening to someone, yet I am not really listening. Instead, I make assumptions and put together a three-point plan for how their situation can be remarkably improved. Yet because I am jumping to my plan before hearing the entire concern, there is a good chance my correction will have missed the point altogether, even suggesting something entirely inappropriate. For those of us, like the autocorrect on the computer, who are usually assuming a response was needed before the request was even made, we need to realize that some people are not looking for a specific fix. Instead, they want someone to listen… really listen.
For those who seek a friend who listens and affirms them, I turn to you, Lord God, as one who desires to be that friend. Grant me the patience to pause and truly listen to what is being said, and to recognize the guidance of your Spirit urging me to keep my mouth shut. Amen.
