ECCLESIOLOGICAL ETCHINGS

Dietrich Bonhoeffer wrote, “Prayer does not mean simply to pour out one’s heart. It means rather to find the way to God and to speak with God, whether the heart is full or empty.” I don’t believe Bonhoeffer was suggesting God is uninterested in what is on our hearts, but the ultimate goal is to align ourselves with the ways of God. As Christians, we would look to the life of Jesus to find the specifics. Though let’s be honest. Occasionally, you need to dump whatever it is that you are carrying. The burden is too much, and it acts as an obstacle to finding God. Divine grace can assist in the letting go, but don’t pretend the freedom from whatever burdened you is the end of the journey. In fact, it is just the beginning. Fasten your seatbelt because it is time to follow Jesus, the teacher and revealer of God’s limitless love for all creation. And as one who has been unburdened, you will be called upon to bear witness to that love with your life.
Discipleship is my response to your grace, O Source of Life and Love. Assist me in getting ready for the task at hand, the task of helping others encounter your marvelous and life-changing gift. Amen.
