Ecclesiological Etchings

Scripture:Nehemiah 8:10

“Go, eat rich food, and drink something sweet,” he said to them, “and send portions of this to any who have nothing ready! This day is holy to our LORD. Don’t be sad, because the joy from the LORD is your strength!”

Thought for the Day: It is important to celebrate. In a world where things can look dismal, even hopeless, celebration should not be forgotten. More importantly, notice how the instruction is given. We are to make good food and share in sweet drink, but just in case someone is unable to participate for whatever reason, we are to make sure there is enough for all to participate in the celebration. Have you ever stood on the outside of a celebration? It might sound petty to some, but I have watched children discover how they were not invited to someone’s birthday party. I have known parents who made the tough choice to not tell their child about an invitation to a birthday party simply because there was not enough money in the budget to buy a birthday present. We need to make a way for everyone to feel welcome, and to be able to celebrate. Even in the worst moments of life, it is healthy and helpful when we pause and raise a glass in joyful celebration.

Prayer: If I have the resources to make sure others can celebrate, O God of the Party, allow the invitation to go out. This is my prayerful request in the name of Jesus who always enjoyed a party. Amen.
