Scripture: John 6:66-67
At this, many of Jesus’ disciples turned away and no longer accompanied him. Jesus asked the Twelve, “Do you also want to leave?”
Thought for the Day: That is a very uncomfortable question to be asked. When nothing is on the line, and we are reading these words casually, it is easy to say out loud, “I’m with you, Jesus. All the way, no matter what!” But in a real life situation, and a majority of the people are walking away for one reason or another, how easy is it to remain committed to Jesus and his ways. Jesus, the one who invited us to live in peace, to offer forgiveness as many times as needed, who commanded us to love and walk humbly with the Lord, is asking in those challenging moments whether or not we are still with him. This is not a question we answer with words, but with our actions. Most of us, at one time or another, have joined the crowd who chose to no longer accompany Jesus. Joining the crowd is easy. Remaining faithful to Jesus is hard.
Prayer: Be merciful, O Lord, in those moments when I follow the crowd along the easy path. Be merciful, and once again extend an invitation to accompany you in a journey of faithfulness. It is not simply about speaking a word of faithfulness to you, but choosing to be faithful to the ways of Jesus in every moment of life. That is my prayer! Amen.
