Ecclesiological Etchings

Scripture: 2 Corinthians 5:17
So then, if anyone is in Christ, that person is part of the new creation. The old things have gone away, and look, new things have arrived!

Thought for the Day: This is the Common English Translation, and I appreciate how it implies something a little different from other translations. Others speak of a new creation coming or being manifest, but here we find the person joining (becoming a part of) the new creation. Too often we think of ourselves as if the universe revolves around us or around our moment in history. What I believe Paul was suggesting is this new creation has existed from the moment God broke into the old creation in Jesus Christ. Our faith is both our realization of this new creation and our decision to embrace it. We are simply one moment in this amazing continuum of faithfulness. We are joining ourselves to the saints of the past and the saints of the future in this new life centered in the transformative love of God that is eternal and unconditional.

Prayer: Eternal Word of Life and Love, awaken my spirit anew to your new reality that is here, yet not fully realized. Awaken my spirit and then invite me once again to join in this marvelous and life-altering existence. Amen.
