Scripture: Romans 4:18
Hoping against hope, he believed that he would become “the father of many nations,” according to what was said, “So numerous shall your descendants be.”
Thought for the Day: Have you ever had a piece of scripture rolling around in your head, yet you couldn’t quite remember its context? A few days back, the words hope against all hope kept coming to mind. I finally sat down and started looking, and I found these words from Romans. Other translations present it a bit differently, but the meaning is still the same. What does it mean to hope against hope. It really sounds like nonsense, yet maybe that’s the point. So many amazing things have been accomplished in the world that once appeared to be nonsense, crazy, impossible. That’s not to suggest that simply having hope will bring about everything we want. Hope is not a Genie in a Bottle. At the same time, we can guarantee that nothing profound and life changing will ever occur if we leave hope behind.
Prayer: O God of the Possible, give me the spiritual glue that will keep me connected to hope. There are days when it is the only thing to which I cling, yet I can trust as it is a gift from you. Amen.
