Ecclesiological Etchings

Scripture: James 3:13
Are any of you wise and understanding? Show that your actions are good with a humble lifestyle that comes from wisdom.

Thought for the Day: In my years of ministry, I have had the great pleasure of sitting down with some really smart people. I am fascinated by people’s life experiences and the way many of them have used those experiences to challenge preconceived notions, ask difficult questions, and explore outside the archetypal box that has so often confined us as human beings. I recently sat down with one such person, and I not only enjoyed the conversation, but ever since the conversation my mind has been spinning with additional questions. In such moments, I realize how little I know and how good it is to sit in the presence of those who have explored areas that are beyond my scope of knowledge. Now there are some who claim great knowledge, but they are not at all that interested in those pesky things call facts. In many of those situations, what I observe are folks who are wanting to act in a certain way (that is self-serving and often harmful to others), and so they seek a theory that defends their actions, theories that often ignore basic science. This is a little backwards, and frankly, damaging to the core of our society. Wisdom isn’t just knowledge, but the fullness of understanding and awareness. When we are willing to put ourselves in the presence of wisdom and to be move by wisdom, I believe our actions – good actions – will follow.

Prayer: Discovering something new can be exciting. Discovering something new can be frightening. When the new leaves me a bit discombobulated, O Lord, let me see it as an opportunity to be stretched. Let me see it as a way of better aligning myself with what is real. Let me see it as the only way my life of faith will be able to impact the world around me in a positive and life-giving way. Amen.
