ECCLESIOLOGICAL ETCHINGS
October 6, 2022

I was really tired last night. Do you ever have those days when you’re so exhausted that it’s sort of hard to look into the future? I remember thinking to myself, “I’m pretty sure I’ve got a busy day tomorrow, but I’m not all that interested in even looking at my calendar.” I eventually did, which was sort of important. But I’ve been thinking about those who are exhausted and have been exhausted for a long time. I think about caregivers, first responders during a hurricane, people who work for the electric company after a big storm, medical staff at the height of the pandemic, parents with a newborn or parents with a sick child. There are different levels of exhaustion, and my exhaustion last night really did not compare to what others have experienced or are currently experiencing. In times like this, I think of Jeremiah 31, where we find the words, “For I will satisfy the weary soul, and every languishing soul I will replenish.” Whether you are exhausted beyond measure, or sort of exhausted, I believe God is seeking to provide sustenance for the soul and comfort for those who languish. Remember, there are times when we are the delivery system of those divine gifts to one another.

Holy God, I wish to drink from your life-sustaining well of mercy and find nourishment in your deep reservoir of love. Amen.
